MARSHALL “ROCK” JONES, the bass player for the OHIO PLAYERS, passed away in HOUSTON on FRIDAY, MAY 27th, after battling cancer. He was 75.
JONES’ daughters, DONNA WILLIAMS and CHARLOTTE PHILLIPS, released a statement, saying “We appreciate all of the support and prayers. We lost not only a father, a grandfather and an uncle, we lost an icon to the community and an icon to his family.”
The band posted on its FACEBOOK page, "Another one of us has left this earth, this earthy body, only to take on the immortal one. When I was hired in 1972, the bass player was MARSHALL JONES. He,in he's way of funk, taught me a lifetime of syncopated rhythm's. To say unique is an understatement, innovative classic, melodic, funkness, is what I became a part of. Jive Turkey, Far East Mississippi, Fire, Honey, I Want To Be Free, just to mention a few of his spectacular artistry. We will miss you on this earth, but as we continue we will not forget your contributions to this institution called 'THE OHIO PLAYERS'. R.I.H. From the entire Band."
