CHRISTINA AGUILERA and MELISSA ETHERIDGE both released singles this week to honor the victims of the mass shooting at the ORLANDO night club PULSE, with proceeds going directly to those affected by the tragedy.
AGUILERA's “Change" (embedded below) is a heartfelt ballad with empowering lyrics like: “For all the brave and the souls who went before us/Stand tall, then proudly lift your voices.. Let 'em know who we are and our choices.”
AGUILERA released a statement describing her motivation: “The horrific tragedy that occurred in ORLANDO continues to weigh heavily on my mind. I am sending so much love and so many prayers to the victims and their families. Like so many, I want to help be part of the change this world needs to make it a beautiful inclusive place where humanity can love each other freely and passionately. We all have the choice to spread love, encourage individuality and make a difference to others,” she added. “We are all in this together, as one, united in love.”
ETHERIDGE was similarly moved to write a song, "Pulse," who told ROLLING STONE: “I'm dealing with it the way I deal, which is, I wrote a song. I just sat here, and I just started writing a song… That's how I first started to cope because, as a singer songwriter, I've done this before. I feel called to speak; to do what musicians do,. You just start thinking about your own pulse. It's the way I've always felt about the gay movement, the gay issue. Here we are — people who are loving; we are fighting for who we want to love."
The song's lyrics seem to target the shooter: "Who you gonna hate now?/When there's no one left but you?/Who you gonna gun down?/If you can't kill the truth/That it's inside of us/Inside our blood/Inside our pulse."
