August 2, 2016 at 11:20 AM (PT)
GREATER MEDIA Classic Rock WMGK (102.9)/PHILADELPHIA will present the first annual JOHN DEBELLA TOMATO FEST on SATURDAY, AUGUST 27th from 12p to 4p (ET) at PENNSAUKEN's COOPER RIVER PARK, in the field located right next to the new COOPER HOUSE RESTAURANT. This free event is a celebration of NEW JERSEY’s most revered crop, the tomato.
Attendees can take part in a variety of tomato-themed activities, including entering the biggest tomato, best tomato sauce, best salsa contests; tasting and voting for the best tomato pie; enjoying cold beer and cocktails in the beer garden and even taking part in rotten tomato target practice. More outlandish tomato-themed activities will be added as the event gets closer.
The event will also help provide food for the less fortunate in the community. All attendees are encouraged to bring fresh produce and canned goods to donate to the SOUTH JERSEY FOOD BANK, which will be on-site collecting items.
The idea for this event came to WMGK’s morning man while driving on BLACK HOUSE PIKE, Said DEBELLA: "Throughout my drive, I came across assorted farm stands selling tomatoes and I thought, with all of these stands and all of the talk about the great JERSEY tomato, why isn’t there a celebration for this piece of produce? I wanted to change that."
Those interested in entering the biggest tomato, best salsa and best tomato sauce contests can find instructions at wmgk.com. The ‘best tomato pie contest’ will feature the area’s best tomato pie purveyors. Attendees will enjoy free samples and vote for their favorite. The winning purveyor wins a free $2,000 advertising campaign on WMGK.
