The SEGUIN INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT in SEGUIN, TX has voted to approve negotiations to take over Country KWED-A/SEGUIN, the SEGUIN DAILY NEWS, and SEGUINTODAY.COM from GUADALUPE MEDIA.
NBC affiliate WOAI-TV/SAN ANTONIO reports that the board voted 6-1 on THURSDAY (8/18) to authorize Superintendent STETSON ROANE to negotiate the take over of the local media cluster under a five-year lease, the latest proposal of which includes a rate of $6,250/month or $75,000/year, with an option to buy at the end of the lease without additional payment. The cost would be funded by ad revenue and a $3,825/month lease of space to ARLAN'S MARKET.
Mayor DON KEIL, a critic of the move, told the SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS, “It’s something that really has the community incensed. I am really shocked by it. I think it’s a ruse to say this is for training kids in journalism class... I think they’re trying to silence one of the critical voices in the community. I really think that’s what’s behind it.”
