ALL ACCESS extends sympathies to family and friends of noted guitarist, NASHVILLE session player, recording artist, and producer TOMMY ALLSUP following his WEDNESDAY (1/11) passing in LUBBOCK, TX. He was 85.
ALLSUP was first active in the 50s, working with BOB WILLS and BUDDY HOLLY, among others. While many know the story about WAYLON JENNINGS giving up his seat to THE BIG BOPPER on the plane that famously crashed in 1959 killing HOLLY, the BOPPER, and upcoming star RITCHIE VALENS, most don’t know that ALLSUP would have been aboard, too, if not for losing a coin toss to VALENS for the last seat.
In addition to his musicianship, ALLSUP’s talents extended to producing records. Among the artist projects he guided were WILLIE NELSON, BOB WILLS, and TEX WILLIAMS. ALLSUP also served in an A&R capacity with LIBERTY RECORDS. He is a member of the OKLAHOMA MUSIC HALL OF FAME. Services are pending.
