Grammy Performers See Sales Increases Per Nielsen, BuzzAngle, Pandora

The GRAMMY’s have come and gone, and NIELSEN MUSIC is compiling the most captivating insights from this year’s GRAMMY AWARD winners and performers. Reflecting the immediate consumer reaction to the biggest night in music, NIELSEN’s digital sales insights reveal some incredible findings.
The show opened with ADELE singing "Hello", kicking off a night that would end with ADELE winning in every category for which she was nominated.
(DFree / Shutterstock) - "Hello" sales on SUNDAY were up 308% over prior FRIDAY/SATURDAY average. Combined, all the songs from her 25 album were up 164% and ADELE's song catalog as a whole was up 154%.
- The album 25 had a 150% sales increase over the FRIDAY/SATURDAY daily average, while her entire album catalog was up 112%.
JStone / Shutterstock BEYONCÉ had an epic performance and was nominated for nine GRAMMYS. Despite not winning in the major categories, she got a huge nod of recognition from ADELE and a flood of support on social media from her fans.
- "Lemonade" sales on SUNDAY were up 267% over her FRIDAY/SATURDAY average. Combined, the songs on Lemonade grew 160% over the same period.
- The song "Formation", nominated as both Song and Record of the year, grew by 105%. She also performed the songs "Love Drought" (+1249%) and "Sandcastles" (+1000%).
MAREN MORRIS performed, was nominated for four awards and won the GRAMMY for Best Country Solo Performance for her song "My Church".
- The song "My Church" saw a 910% increase in sales on SUNDAY. She performed the song "Once" with ALICIA KEYS, which also pushed the song’s sales up by over 6700%.
- Sales of her album "Hero" jumped by 232% on SUNDAY
BRUNO MARS and THE TIME combined to deliver a tribute to PRINCE.
- PRINCE's total album sales grew by over 133% on SUNDAY and his song catalog grew by 243%, led by "Let's Go Crazy" up 627%
Despite the hiccup in her performance, ADELE's heartfelt tribute to GEORGE MICHAEL lifted his song "Fastlove" up nearly 6500% in sales on SUNDAY.
An all-star cast paid tribute to THE BEE GEES, which gave a noticeable boost to their songs "Stayin' Alive" (+138%), "Tragedy" (+1816%), "How Deep is Your Love" (+1146%) and "Night Fever" (+686%).
Some other notable impacts from key performances:
- KEITH URBAN and CARRIE UNDERWOOD performed "The Fighter", which saw its sales increase by 978% on SUNDAY.
- LUKAS GRAHAM and KELSEA BALLERINI performed "7 Years", resulting in a lift of 869% for the hit song, as well as "Peter Pan", which rose by 335%
- BRUNO MARS performed "That's What I Like", resulting in an increase of 385%
- STURGILL SIMPSON performed his song "All Around You", resulting in a 10,760% increase for the song. He was also nominated in the coveted Album of the Year category, which raised his album Sailor's Guide to Earth up by 588%.
- A TRIBE CALLED QUEST, along with ANDERSON .PAAK, BUSTA RHYMES and CONSEQUENCE performed the songs "Award Tour" (+1,110%), "Movin' Backwards" (+3,567%) and "We the People..." (+1,213%).
- THE TIME kicked off the PRINCE tribute with their songs "Jungle Love" (+1,837%) and "The Bird" (+4,180%)
- JOHN LEGEND and CYNTHIA ERIVO performed a touching version of THE BEACH BOYS "God Only Knows" in tribute to all those that the music world has lost in the past year, resulting in a 1,581% increase for the original version of the song.
BUZZANGLE MUSIC weighed in with their observations,
- Album sales for ADELE's "25" jumped 232% SUNDAY night, with 4,044 sales
- STURGILL SIMPSON’s album "A Sailor’s Guide To Earth" had 3,471 sales on SUNDAY and experienced the biggest uplift in sales among all GRAMMY-winning albums (that had sales < 500 sales) with an uplift of 789%
- BEYONCE’s "Lemonade" had the most sales on SUNDAY out of all the winning albums with 4,373 sales, an increase of 297% compared to the previous six-day average
- BRUNO MARS' "24K Magic" did not win a GRAMMY, but his album jumped 206% with 6,728 sales on SUNDAY, the secnd biggest-selling album in U.S. on SUNDAY with 6,728 sales
- MAREN MORRIS’ album experienced an uplift of 300% in sales on SUNDAY with 2,727 .|
- All the songs performed on the GRAMMYs experienced an average increase of 2,363% in sales on the night of the ceremony compared to the six days leading up to the awards show
- MAREN MORRIS' "Once" had the overall largest growth in sales of all songs performed; up over 13,477% in sales on SUNDAY. There were just about 5,600 sales for "Once" on SUNDAY night compared to a daily average of 41 sales for the previous six days.
- WILLIAM BELL’s "Born Under A Bad Sign" had the largest percentage growth in sales 23,691%; a unit sales increase of 1,698. The average daily songs sales leading up to the awards show was seven
- ED SHEERAN’s "Shape Of You" and BRUNO MARS' "That’s What I Like" were the top two songs that had the largest sales gains on SUNDAY. "Shape Of You" had 46,266 sales on SUNDAY (up 164%), which was an increase of nearly 29,000 sales compared to the previous six days. "That’s What I Like" had 23,000 sales on SUNDAY (up 527%) which was an increase of nearly 20,000 sales compared to the previous six days
- ED SHEERAN and BRUNO MARS were the performers that had the largest overall song sales increases among all performers. SHEERAN had 59,405 song sales on SUNDAY; with an increase of 37,080 sales compared to the previous six-day average (or 166% growth). MARS had 48,756 song sales on SUNDAY; an increase of 36,382 sales compared to the previous 6 day average (or 294% growth).
- ​MAREN MORRIS had the largest GRAMMY growth for song sales among all performers (815%) who had a sales increase of greater than 10,000 sales.
- Four artists experienced over 1,000% growth in song sales; STURGILL SIMPSON (1,063%), THE TIME (1,871%), GARY CLARK JR. (2,146%) and WILLIAM BELL (5,803%).
- The three artists that had tributes; PRINCE, BEE GEES and GEORGE MICHAEL , each had triple digit song sales growth: PRINCE song sales grew 338%, GEORGE MICHAEL grew 553% and BEE GEES song sales grew 640%
PANDORA also tapped WILLIAM BELL as the artist who experienced the most post-GRAMMY listening activity, up 12,085%, along with GARY CLARK JR. (3,239%), STURGILL SIMPSON (741%), CYNTHIA ERIVO (575%), ANDERSON .PAAK (504%), MAREN MORRIS (417%), CHANCE THE RAPPER (244%), LUKAS GRAHAM (164%), PRINCE (161%) and A TRIBE CALLED QUEST (142%).
