Longtime BALTIMORE public radio host MARC STEINER is leaving his radio home of the last 9 years, MORGAN STATE UNIVERSITY noncommercial Jazz-News-Talk WEAA/BALTIMORE, as the station tells the BALTIMORE SUN's DAVID ZURAWIK that it is changing directions and moving from airing programs produced by third parties like STEINER to news produced by MORGAN STATE journalism students. The final installment of the show will air JULY 31st.
STEINER's CENTER FOR EMERGING MEDIA produces "THE MARC STEINER SHOW," airing weekdays 10a-noon (ET), for WEAA; the show has been airing for 24 years, first on then-JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY noncommercial WJHU, which became YOUR PUBLIC RADIO CORP. News-Talk WYPR.
ZURAWIK reports that MORGAN STATE Dean DEWAYNE WICKHAM told STEINER that in light of the refocusing of the station, the show "did not fit" with the new direction and STEINER would no longer receive funding for the show from the school, which amounted to $100,000 per year plus $9,000 towards a producer, while STEINER was permitted to raise underwriting and keep that money. "It's a quality show," WICKHAM said, "but we just can't afford it."
