NORTH CAROLINA STATE student-run station WKNC/RALEIGH is releasing a mixtape, "First Semester," a compilation highlighting 23 NORTH CAROLINA artists in the hip-hop, electronic and indie rock genres. The mixtape is set to be released on MAY 19th and can be downloaded for free here. Downloaders are encouraged to donate any dollar amount to help support WKNC’s mission of supporting local artists and educating students about radio broadcasting.
"First Semester" features artists ranging from the dynamic electronic duo SYLVAN ESSO, hailing from CARBORO to RALEIGH’s rapper, singer and songwriter ACE HENDERSON. The mixtape integrates household names with burgeoning underground stars to provide a listening experience unique to the state. "The mixtape is a really eclectic collection and wild cohesive ride throughout,” sLOwgLOw, a new electronic duo out of RALEIGH featured on the mixtape, said.
WKNC DJ CARL WILKINS, who created the mixtape, observed, "I was inspired to come up with a way to raise awareness about NORTH CAROLINA's vibrant music scene and funding for the station so that we can continue sharing great music and supporting the amazing listeners, artists and students that depend on WKNC. We are excited to share the mixtape; we hope that people will hear and appreciate the diverse sounds of the state. There is nothing like finding new music that you love, and I promise that there is something on the mixtape for everyone; you might even stumble upon your new favorite artists."
