Converting Radio Audiences To Podcast Listeners
"WTF WITH MARC MARON" producer BRENDAN MC DONALD kicked off the post-lunch schedule with insights into how the show became one of the world's most downloaded podcasts; MCDONALD was followed by a session hosted by CBC Senior Director, Audio Innovation LESLIE MERKLINGER, who offered advice on how to get radio audiences to find podcasts as well and pointed to how "There are different audiences for radio and podcast so they are not competing."
Diversity, Trends, And Getting Personal
After a presentation by NRK/NORWAY’s RUNAR HENRIKSEDN JORSTAD and IRINA TJELLE on their podcast “COP OR CROOK,” BBC WORLD SERVICE Podcast Editor JON MANUEL explained how his network uses podcasts to reach new and more diverse audiences. NICK QUAH, the creator of the HOTPOD email newsletter, Skyped into the convention to discuss podcasting trends, while COLM ROCHE presented a talk on his podcast, "FATHERS AND SONS,' which deals with very personal issues like cancer, family businesses, and a son finding his father a date on TINDER.
Money, Exposure, And The Best Of The Best
RADIO SPAIN Manager of Innovation and Product Development PABLO FERNANDEZ DELKÁDER, RADIO FRANCE Head of Digital/CDO LAURENT FRISCH, and audioBOOM SVP International Operations RUTH FITZSIMONS spoke on making money from podcasting outside the U.S., noting massive growth in listening in EUROPE and increased interest from brand advertisers.
FOLDER MEDIA's MATT DEEGAN explained the thinking behind the new DAB channel in ENGLAND, UPLOAD RADIO, which offers a pay-to-play brokering opportunity for producers to get their shows on the station on both DAB and online; PLANET BROADCASTING/AUSTRALIA Founder and Creative Director CLAIRE TONTI told the story of how she and her husband JAMES CLEMENT took their podcast "THE WEEKLY PLANET" from inception to one of the most listened to podcasts in her country, relating how working with children taught her about telling stories and offering a guide to using YouTube for publicity.
And closing the day was a panel that saw participants recommending their top three favorite podcasts. MCDONALD and DEEGAN returned and were joined by WNYC STUDIOS' PAULA SZUCHMAN, DR/DENMARK's RASMUS BJERR to tout shows like "THE CINEMILE," "A GAY AND A NON-GAY," "ACCUSED," "MAKING OPRAH," "HEAVYWEIGHT," "THE SPORKFUL," "BRAINS ON!," and TOM SCHARPLING's "THE BEST SHOW."See Ya Next Year
