DALY XXL COMMUNICATIONS News-Talk-Oldies WMEX-A/BOSTON has gone off the air. The station signed off at 6p (ET) FRIDAY (6/30). A message at the station's FACEBOOK page thanked listeners for their support and suggested that "you will hear from all of (your favorite WMEX shows) very soon." And on the air, hosts hinted that new ownership would be taking over the station, although no details were offered. The station continued to stream repeats of "RENEGADE RADIO" into the weekend but the on-air signal was shut down FRIDAY.
The WMEX calls were used from the station's sign-on in 1934 through its heyday as a Top 40 station (featuring ARNIE "WOO WOO" GINSBURG and a nightly talk show with JERRY WILLIAMS) in 1957-76; a flip to News-Talk with RED SOX games in 1976 was followed by a change in calls to WITS. The station later did Adult Standards as WMRE-A, AC as WSSH-A, Country as WKKU-A, and Religion as WNRB-A; after a brief run with Spanish, the station became part of SPORTING NEWS RADIO (under PAUL ALLEN's ROSE CITY RADIO) as WWZN-A (1510 THE ZONE). PETER DAVIDSON's BLACKSTRAP BROADCASTING bought the station along with WSNR-A/JERSEY CITY-NEW YORK for $20.5 million in 2007.
The station was brokered out for JEFF SANTOS' liberal News-Talk REVOLUTION RADIO in 2008-12, back to Sports as WUFC-A (NBC SPORTS RADIO 1510). The station was brokered to DALY XXL in 2015 for a libertarian and conservative News-Talk format that at times featured HOWIE CARR's syndicated show during his exile from crosstown ENTERCOM News-Talk WRKO-A, shows from the BOSTON HERALD's online audio service, and the syndicated GLENN BECK, SEAN HANNITY, and MICHAEL SAVAGE shows along with DALY XXL's own "RENEGADE RADIO" and local shows with JOE SHORTSLEEVES and MICHELE MCPHEE. At the end, "RENEGADE RADIO." SANDY SHACK, SAVAGE, and the WASHINGTON-based TIM CONSTANTINE show were in the lineup.
DALY XXL bought the station outright in 2015 for $175,000.
