UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA Triple A WXPN/PHILADELPHIA will celebrate the 30th Anniversary of its award-winning radio show KIDS CORNER later this month. Events will include the KIDS CORNER 30TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT on SUNDAY, APRIL 22nd, and the biennial professional gathering of “kindie” (independent kids’ music) artists called KINDIECOMM on APRIL 20th & 21st. Both events will take place at WORLD CAFE LIVE, the live music venue that shares a building with WXPN.
KIDS CORNER, AMERICA’s longest-running, daily call-in radio show just for kids, launched on WXPN JANUARY 4th, 1988 with host KATHY O’CONNELL, who was joined by producer ROBERT DRAKE the following day. A grant from the WILLIAM PENN FOUNDATION helped to establish the program. In recognition of KIDS CORNER’s success, it has earned more than 20 broadcasting awards for excellence and originality, including the prestigious GEORGE FOSTER PEABODY AWARD and the MAJOR EDWIN ARMSTRONG AWARD.
“KIDS CORNER has sparked the imaginations and provided safe harbor for a generation of children who have grown up and have kids of their own who are now tuning in,” said WXPN GM ROGER LAMAY. “KATHY is a national treasure, and all of us in the WXPN community applaud her impact.”
The kindie artists who will perform at the KIDS CORNER 30TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT (open to the public) are TROUT FISHING IN AMERICA, LARD DOG AND THE BAND OF SHY, THE PHILADELPHIA BOYS CHOIR & CHORALE, and BILLY KELLY.
Artists participating in an industry showcase and/or session as part of KINDIECOMM are TROUT FISHING IN AMERICA, BILLY JONAS, LITTLE MISS ANN, JASON DIDNER AND JUNGLE GYM JAM, MICHAEL AND THE ROCKNESS MONSTERS, SEÑOR FANCYPANTS, and THE MICROPHONE DOCTORS, among others.
O’CONNELL will interview DR. DEMENTO, the legendary American radio broadcaster and novelty song producer, in one of KINDIECOMM’s industry sessions.
