State broadcasters' associations representing all 50 states as well as the DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA and PUERTO RICO have sent a letter TODAY (5/7) to Senate Majority Leader MITCH MCCONNELL (R-KY) and House Majority Leader CHUCK SCHUMER (D-NY) urging the passage of the Senate version of the Preventing Illegal Radio Abuse Through Enforcement (PIRATE) Act (S. 1228).
The House version of the anti-pirate radio bill (H.R. 583), which is intended to strengthen enforcement of anti-unlicensed operator laws and increasing fines to up to $100,000 per violation and $2 million maximum, was passed unanimously in FEBRUARY (NET NEWS 2/25).
The letter tells the Senate and House leaders, "We are reaching the point where illegal pirate stations undermine the legitimacy and purpose of the FCC’s licensing system to the detriment of listeners in communities across the country. The PIRATE Act will help the FCC restore integrity to the system."
