CARRIE UNDERWOOD was the top winner at the 2019 CMT MUSIC AWARDS, held last night (6/5) at NASHVILLE’S BRIDGESTONE ARENA. She took home two awards for two different clips, winning Video Of The Year for “Cry Pretty” and Female Video for “Love Wins.” UNDERWOOD continued her streak as the show’s top all-time winner. Her newest trophies put her CMT Awards career total at 20.
The rest of the night’s awards were spread out among six other Country stars — KANE BROWN, LUKE COMBS, DAN + SHAY, ASHLEY MCBRYDE, KEITH URBAN, and ZAC BROWN BAND, and two of their collaborators from other genres, JULIA MICHAELS and LEON BRIDGES. COMBS, MCBRYDE, BRIDGES and MICHAELS were all first-time winners.
ZAC BROWN turned heads with his fiery acceptance speech. Reading from prepared notes, he said, in part, “For you young artists, have courage to stand up against the machine. Be yourself, work hard and one day you can stand up here and tell all the haters to f@*k off.”
LITTLE BIG TOWN’s KAREN FAIRCHILD and KIMBERLY SCHLAPMAN had one of the night’s other memorable moments when they turned a bit about a hair-do into a commentary about the gender imbalance at Country radio. FAIRCHILD noted, “Last week there were only two female artist on the Country airplay top 20. Back in DECEMBER it was even worse. There were none. Here’s may question ladies in the house, what do we have to do to get some airplay around here?” SCHLAPMAN responded by pulling off a cowboy hat to reveal a wig, while commenting, “I know what we need to do. We need a mullet… Business in the front, party in the back, power on the charts.”
As part of this year’s show, CMT and SAVE THE MUSIC committed to gifting a new band program to a deserving public school. Breakthrough Video Of The Year winner MCBRYDE selected the city of NEW ORLEANS and KIPP FEST COMMUNITY PROGRAM to be the recipients of this gift.
