The Ratings Experts from RESEARCH DIRECTOR, INC., along with the numbers nerds from XTRENDS, are about to complete our JUNE swoon. Six books down for 2019 with a mere seven to go. Like sands of time through the hourglass our relentless pursuit of clarification knows no end. Meaningless word salad or profound insight? You be the judge. In the meantime, here are more numbers from the 5/23 through 6/19 ratings period.
MIAMI-FT.LAUDERDALE-HOLLYWOOD: Making It Look EZ
Perhaps the headline should be “same as it ever was” as the top six 6+ stations were in the exact same spots we found them in last month. COX RADIO AC WFEZ (EASY) continued to lead the way as it won for the sixth time in a row. Oh, and the station also had its best book since OCTOBER (6.8-7.6). COX RADIO Urban AC WHQT (HOT) finished second for the fourth book in a row (6.3-6.6). ENTERCOM AC WLYF (LITE) remained at #3 but with its lowest share since OCTOBER (6.1-5.4). UNIVISION Spanish Contemporary WAMR (AMOR) returned at #4 (5.6-5.3) while SBS Tropical WCMQ (Z92.3) was the #5 station once again (5.5-4.9). ENTERCOM Classic Hits WMXJ (THE BEACH) was dangerously close to cracking the top five from its familiar #6 perch (4.8-4.7).
Well, things certainly got interesting 25-54 as the demo turned into a full-out AC battle. WFEZ leapt from a tie at #8 to #1 as it got back all of last month’s loss – plus a little extra. WLYF slipped back to a very close #2 after posting its lowest share since DECEMBER. WHQT moved up to #3 as it ended a three-book slide while WAMR fell back to #4 with a small loss. SBS Tropical WXDJ (EL ZOL) stepped back to #5 with its third down book in a row. iHEARTMEDIA Spanish Contemporary WZTU (TU 94.9) had its fourth straight down book as it dropped three places to #6.
Unlike what we saw in the 6+ arena, the 18-34 competition had all the players moving this time. It was led by ENTERCOM Top 40/R WPOW (POWER), which moved from #4 to #1 with its best book in over a year. WLYF remained at #2 with a slight decrease and was a half share behind the leader. COX RADIO Urban WEDR (99JAMZ) ended its three-book stay at #1 and dropped back to #3 with its lowest share in over a year. WFEZ jumped four places to #4 as it ended a rather steep two-book slide. iHEARTMEDIA Urban WMIB (THE BEAT) dropped back to #5 with its lowest share in over a year and was tied with COX RADIO Top 40/M WFLC (HITS), which moved up from a tie at #8 with its highest share since JULY. WAMR inched up to #7 thanks to its best outing since JANUARY. WXDJ launched itself from #15 to #8 with its highest mark since DECEMBER. UNIVISION Tropical WRTO (MIX) fell to #9 as it returned a good portion of last month’s increase. It was tied with WZTU.
So, last month WFEZ fell from #3 to #9 18-49 as it took a big hit. This time the station regained all that lost share and leapt from #9 to #1. It edged out WLYF – which had won the last two surveys. LITE dropped to #2 with its smallest share since OCTOBER. WAMR remained at #3 with a slight decrease and was paired with WPOW, which moved up from #8 with its third straight up book. WFLC held steady at #5 with a slight increase. WXDJ slipped to #6 where it was tied with WEDR. WZTU dropped from #2 to #8 with its lowest total in over a year.
SEATTLE-TACOMA: A Photo Finish
Last month both iHEARTMEDIA Classic Rock KZOK and HUBBARD Top 40/M KQMV (MOVIN) were tied at #2 6+. The stations were still tied this time but had a loftier perch (hint: #1). KZOK was up for the seventh book in a row (6.0-6.1) while MOVIN was just up (6.0-6.1). UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON N/T KUOW gave back all of last month’s increase (6.1-5.6) to fall back to #3. ENTERCOM Active Rock KISW was up three places to #4 with its third up book in a row (4.5-4.8). BONNEVILLE Talk KIRO-F remained at #5 (4.9-4.6) while three stations were nearby at #6. ENTERCOM Country KKWF (THE WOLF) dropped back from #4 (5.0-4.5) while ENTERCOM AC KSWD (THE SOUND) moved up a spot (4.5-4.5). Making it a cluster three-way was iHEARTMEDIA Adult Hits KJAQ (JACK), which turned it up from eleven with its best book in over a year (3.7-4.5).
There was far less drama 25-54 as KQMV captured the crown for the sixth book in a row. The station regained all of last month’s lost share to lead the market by nearly a share and a half. KISW moved up to #2 with its best outing since DECEMBER. This pushed ENTERCOM Alternative KNDD (THE END) back to #3 even though it got back most of last survey’s loss. KZOK inched up to #4 with its best showing since AUGUST. HUBBARD AC KRWM (WARM) stepped up to #5 with a flat performance while KKWF slipped to #6 with a small loss.
The 18-34 arena had quite a few changes. KISW moved back to #1 for the first time since AUGUST thanks to its best share in over a year. KQMV was flat and fell back to #2. What had been a small advantage turned into a share-plus deficit. The big mover was HUBBARD Country KNUC (THE BULL), which charged from #10 to #3 with its sixth straight up book. KZOK awoke alone at #4 with a slight decrease. Its former partner – KNDD – stepped back to #5. It was tied with ENTERCOM Rhythmic AC KHTP (HOT), which moved up from #9 with its highest mark in over a year. iHEARTMEDIA Top 40/M KBKS (KISS) fell from #3 to a tie at #11 with its lowest total since Santa was doing his thing.
KQMV was flat and steady as the #1 station 18-49. KISW remained #2 but cut the lead in about half. KNDD repeated at #3 with a slight increase while KNUC moved up to #4 with its highest share in over a year. KRWM stepped back to #5 despite a slight increase while its former partner in that space – KKWF – dropped to #6 just by being flat. KJAQ had a huge increase, which propelled the station from a tie at #11 to #7, where it was tied with KZOK.
DETROIT: Another Re-MIX
Sometimes, being flat is a good thing. Witness iHEARTMEDIA Urban AC WMXD (MIX). The station maintained last month’s number (6.9-6.9) and that kept it in first place. BEASLEY Classic Rock WCSX was the new #2 station (6.4-6.5), which pushed iHEARTMEDIA AC WNIC back to #3 (6.5-5.9). It was tied with ENTERCOM Classic Hits WOMC, which moved up from #7 with its best book since DECEMBER (5.2-5.9). ENTERCOM News WWJ-A slipped to #5 with its lowest share in over a year (6.2-5.4). It was partnered with iHEARTMEDIA Top 40/M WKQI (CHANNEL 955), which remained in place (5.5-5.4). It is worth noting that ENTERCOM AC WDZH (THE BREEZE) had its best book since becoming what it is today and moved up four places to #8 (4.1-4.8).
Last month WKQI and WNIC were tied at #1 25-54. That partnership did not last long. WKQI dipped to #3 with its lowest score since JANUARY while WNIC landed at #5. Your new market leader was BEASLEY Active Rock WRIF, which advanced from #4 with its best showing since FEBRUARY. Hot on its heels was WCSX, which was flat but still moved up to #2. WMXD was up to #4 thanks to a slight increase. WOMC was close to cracking the top five. It moved up to #6 with its best performance since NOVEMBER. ENTERCOM Sports WXYT-F (THE TICKET) fell to a tie at #8 with its lowest share in over a year. Go TIGERS?
The 18-34 competition got a lot more heated. WKQI was #1 for the sixth book in a row but with its lowest share since the right jolly old elf was hogging the airwaves. WRIF remained #2 but with its highest share in over a year. That cut the gap from two and a half shares to under a half share. ENTERCOM Country WYCD was up to #3 despite a small decrease. BEASLEY Rhythmic AC WMGC (THE BOUNCE) slipped to #4 with its smallest share in over a year. It was joined by iHEARTMEDIA Urban WJLB, which was up from #7 despite a slight decrease. WOMC leapt from a tie at #12 to #6 with its highest share since DECEMBER. Oh, and it was sharing that space with iHEARTMEDIA Classic Rock WLLZ (WHEELS), WXYT-F, WDZH, and WMXD. WNIC dropped from #5 to a tie at #12 with its lowest score since NOVEMBER.
WRIF had its best 18-49 book since FEBRUARY to move up to #1. WKQI was pushed back to #2 thus ending its three-book winning streak. WXYT-F remained at #3 but fell farther off the pace while WMGC repeated at #4 but with its lowest total since NOVEMBER. WYCD was off slightly but moved up to #5 where it was in a meeting with WCSX, WNIC, and WLLZ.
PHOENIX: Peak Performance
Last month iHEARTMEDIA Adult Hits KYOT (THE MOUNTAIN) saw its 6+ winning streak end at three. Well, this time the station got back all that lost share (5.4-6.6) to move back to the top spot. iHEARTMEDIA AC KESZ (KEZ 99.9) remained a very close #2 with its best outing since JANUARY (5.9-6.5). Last month’s leader – HUBBARD Classic Rock KSLX – dropped to #3 (6.1-6.1). ENTERCOM Classic Hits KOOL (KOOL) inched up to #4 thanks to its best book in over a year (5.0-5.3). iHEARTMEDIA Top 40/M KZZP (KISS) slipped to #5 with its lowest total in over a year (5.3-4.6). HUBBARD Active Rock KUPD was close behind at #6 (4.8-4.5).
The top five 25-54 players remained the same but with a few new perspectives. KYOT again scaled to the summit with its highest share in over a year. KUPD stepped back to #2 with a modest loss. KZZP slipped back to #3 with its lowest score since AUGUST while KSLX remained at #4 with its best outing since JANUARY. KOOL gave an encore performance at #5. Just two books ago the station was sitting at #13.
KUPD rocked the 18-34 demo for the sixth book in a row. The station did post its lowest share of the streak but still led ENTERCOM Top 40/M KALV (LIVE 101.5) – which moved up to #2 – by over a share. KZZP stepped back to #3 as it ended a two-book surge. KYOT moved up to #4 as it got back most of last month’s share loss. KSLX remained a fixture at #5 with a slight increase. It was just ahead of KESZ, which jumped from a tie at #11 to #6 with its best Frosty-free share since NOVEMBER. iHEARTMEDIA Hot AC KMXP (MIX) slid to #7 with its least productive outing since OCTOBER.
This was the fifth straight 18-49 win for KUPD. KYOT moved up to #2 with its best book since DECEMBER and was less than a half share off the lead. KZZP stepped back to #3 as it returned all of last month’s increase. KSLX stepped up to #4 as it got back most of last month’s loss. KALV stepped down to #5 with a modest loss. KMXP slipped back to #6 with its lowest share in over a year and was paired with KESZ, which moved up from a tie at #10.
MINNEAPOLIS-ST.PAUL: A Tight Squeeze
The 6+ race was very tight as the top four stations were separated by half a share. HUBBARD Hot AC KSTP (KS95) assumed control (6.7-6.7) but just barely. iHEARTMEDIA Classic Hits KQQL (KOOL) – which shared the lead last month – was right on KSTP’s rear bumper (6.8-6.6). CUMULUS Active Rock KXXR (93X) was up to #3 with its best book since JANUARY (6.2-6.4). UNIVERSITY OF NORTHWESTERN-ST.PAUL Christian Contemporary KTIS inched up to #4 (6.1-6.2). Last month’s other co-leader – CUMULUS Classic Rock KQRS – fell to #5 (6.8-5.9). It was just ahead of #6 ENTERCOM Adult Hits KZJK (JACK) (5.7-5.7), which was just ahead of #7 iHEARTMEDIA Top 40/M KDWB (6.1-5.5). KDWB was sharing the seven spot with MPR N/T KNOW, which jumped up from #11 with its highest share in over a year (4.3-5.5). This was the first time in over a year that KDWB was not in the top five.
The top two stations 25-54 remained the same, they just grew a little more distant. KXXR was #1 with its best share since FEBRUARY while KSTP repeated at #2 but with its lowest share since that same month. KQQL moved up to #3 with a slight increase while a flat KZJK advanced to #4. KDWB dropped to #5 with its lowest share in over a year and was tied with KTIS, which was up from #8 with a slight increase. KQRS dropped four places to a tie at #8 but was less than a half share away from a return to the top five.
Oh my goodness. When it comes to 18-34 you can’t stop KXXR, you can only hope to contain them. The station posted its highest share in over a year – in double digits, of course. KDWB remained #2 but was now over five shares behind the leader. KSTP repeated at #3 but with its best book in over a year. iHEARTMEDIA Country KEEY (K102) returned at #4 but gave back most of last month’s increase. NORTHERN LIGHTS Top 40/R KZGO (GO 95.3) was off slightly but still moved up to #5. KQRS slipped to #6 where it was tied with KZJK.
KXXR cracked the 18-49 double-digit code for the second book in a row. KSTP moved up to #2 with a slight increase but was still more than three shares behind the leader. KDWB stepped back to #3 as it returned all of last month’s increase. The two former #6 stations were no longer on speaking terms but did move into the top five. KQQL ascended to #4 with its highest Frosty-free share since SEPTEMBER. KTIS landed flat at #5. KEEY stepped back to #6 with a slight decrease while KQRS dropped four places to #8.
