Dorian In The Carolinas. Red = Hurricane Warning, Brown = Flash Flood Warning, Yellow = Tornado Warning
HURRICANE DORIAN's sharp turn northeast may have spared much of FLORIDA, but the CAROLINAS and GEORGIA coastlines are catching the brunt of the now Category 2 storm, with maximum sustained winds at 110 mph, CNN reports. Currently located about 55 miles southeast of MYRTLE BEACH, SC, it has caused widespread flooding, as approximately 252,649 customers have been without power in GEORGIA, NORTH CAROLINA and SOUTH CAROLINA, and even a couple of tornadoes have been spotted in MYRTLE BEACH, SC and WILMINGTON, NC.
At DICK BROADCASTING/GREENVILLE-NEW BERN-JACKSONVILLE, NC, WERO PD/afternoons GINA GREY said, "We are giving updates twice an hour from our TV media partner, WITN. We are posting on social media and website all hurricane-related info such as power outages, road conditions, flood and storm surge predictions and updates. We hope to remain on the air as long as possible. If the storm warrants, we will go wall-to-wall with coverage from our TV media partner. Our building is compromised because it floods! After the storm we will move into recovery and relief efforts."
Stations in the WILMINGTON, NC market are planning to drop regular programming to simulcast hurricane coverage, according to the RALEIGH NEWS AND OBSERVER, include the SUNRISE BROADCASTING cluster of Rhythmic Oldies WKXB (JAMMIN 99.9), AC WKXB-HD2-W240AS (95.9 THE BREEZE), AC WILT (SUNNY 103.7), Sports WMFD-A-W269DF (ESPN WILMINGTON), Top 40 WAZO (Z107.5), and Alternative WRMR (98.7 COASTAL CAROLINA'S MODERN ROCK).
WRMR PD LAURA LEE told ALL ACCESS, "We did a mix of talk, playing the WRAL news feed over the air and taking phone calls, Coverage all night."
Thinking Of The Bahamas
While MIAMI was relatively spared from DORIAN, COX MEDIA GROUP/MIAMI is partnering with WINN-DIXIE to collect donations for those who were impacted by DORIAN in THE BAHAMAS. Personalities from 99 JAMZ, EASY 93.1, HITS 97.3 and HOT 105 will be broadcasting live today and tomorrow from 10a-7p at a number of WINN-DIXIE locations, where they will meet listeners, accept donations and give away one $50 WINN-DIXIE gift card every hour at each broadcast location. Donation items to be collected include non-perishable food, battery-powered radios, batteries, sunscreen, infant formula and diapers, personal hygiene items and much more.
“COX MEDIA GROUP is proud to partner with WINN-DIXIE to collect supplies for those impacted by HURRICANE DORIAN in THE BAHAMAS,” CMG/MIAMI GM RALPH RENZI said. “We stand with the people of THE BAHAMAS and hope this much-needed support will provide relief and help their community recover.”
“We have the best listeners in MIAMI and the support this community provides in times of need is truly inspirational,” CMG/MIAMI Dir./Community Relations MAESTRO POWELL said. “It takes a village to raise a community so thank you to everyone who comes out to support CMG Labor of Love Bahamas Relief.”
