Report: Album Sales Down In 2006, But Overall Music Sales Climb

Total U.S. album sales fell 4.9% in 2006, to 588.2 million units, according to NIELSEN SOUNDSCAN totals reported by REUTERS. However, overall music sales, including single digital tracks, rose 19.4%, to 1.19 billion units. Digital tracks themselves were up 65%, to 581.9 million units.
The year's best-selling album was the soundtrack to "HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL," with sales exceeding 3.7 million units. NIELSEN SOUNDSCAN also reported that DANIEL POWTER's "Bad Day" was the first digital song to break the 2 million-sales mark in a year; 22 digital songs exceeded 1 million units sold in 2006, compared to only two in 2005.
