URBAN ONE/REACH MEDIA's THE TOM JOYNER MORNING SHOW (TJMS) will broadcast through DECEMBER 31st and then retire. However, his final live show in-studio will be this FRIDAY, DECEMBER 13th.
OPRAH recently called the show to congratulate him on his upcoming retirement after 25 years in radio syndication (NET NEWS 12/6).
YESTERDAY, (12/9) while on air JOYNER got calls from ARSENIO HALL, former Pres. BILL CLINTON, basketball HALL OF FAME's MAGIC JOHNSON, former DALLAS COWBOY & FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME's EMMITT SMITH, journalist APRIL RYAN, and LIONEL RICHIE. Many other surprise notables are expected to call in on the show between now and FRIDAY.
In the mid-80s, JOYNER earned the nickname “THE FLY JOCK” for flying round-trip between DALLAS and CHICAGO five days a week -- doing his morning drive program at KKDA (K 104)/DALLAS and then commuting to WGCI (107.5)/CHICAGO for his afternoon show. During his tenure with the two stations he traveled eight million miles.
Through ABC RADIO NETWORKS, he became the first morning show with music in syndication. JOYNER created a lane for Urban/R&B programming, helping it become syndicated on all levels from morning shows, to afternoon shows, and services. His first TOM JOYNER MORNING SHOW broadcast in syndication on JANUARY 3rd, 1994 -- the show featured the late LUTHER VANDROSS for a live in-studio performance.
In 2003, JOYNER made THE TOM JOYNER MORNING SHOW part of his newly created company, REACH MEDIA, INC. A cross-platform entertainment company that created events, digital content, and initiatives -- raising money to support students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities with THE TOM JOYNER FOUNDATION (over $65 million raised to date); and producing/hosting a celebration of black families & communities with the ALLSTATE TOM JOYNER FAMILY REUNION.
He’s been inducted into the RADIO HALL OF FAME and his career trophy case includes THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF BROADCASTERS MARCONI AWARD, BILLBOARD's "Best Urban Contemporary Air Personality” Award, the NAACP IMAGE AWARD, and many honorary doctorate degrees.
