With Country artists all over the world performing live on social media due to COVID-19 precautions (NET NEWS 3/19), a new trend has caught wind called the #DeepCutsChallenge. The challenge was created by BIG MACHINE RECORDS' TIM MCGRAW, who took to INSTAGRAM last FRIDAY (3/20) with an acoustic performance of JOHN SCHNEIDER's 1980s hit "Take The Long Way Home," and encouraged other artists to share their favorite older cuts on the social media platform.
"Who's got cool songs they've always loved to play when they're sitting around the house or [from] when [you] were in high school or college?" MCGRAW asked in his post. He then challenged KENNY CHESNEY, JASON ALDEAN and BRAD PAISLEY to post videos of themselves performing their favorite cuts.
PAISLEY responded to MCGRAW's challenge with an INSTAGRAM cover of STEVE WARINER's "What I Didn't Do" FROM 1984, following up with a challenge to DARIUS RUCKER playfully stating, "No HOOTIE covers, that's cheating."
RUCKER continued the trend with a video covering FOSTER & LLOYD's "You Can Come Cryin' To Me," and followed with a challenge to fellow Country artists LUKE BRYAN, CHARLES KELLEY and JASON ALDEAN.
KELLEY kept the momentum going, posting his rendition of TEMPLE OF THE DOG's "Call Me A Dog," and calling out RUSSELL DICKERSON to jump on the challenge next.
In honor of the man who started the challenge, DICKERSON covered MCGRAW'S song "Seventeen," and passed the torch to THOMAS RHETT, who accepted the request covering HANK WILLIAMS JR.'s "Blues Man" before challenging MORGAN WALLEN.
WALLEN posted his contribution with a cover of ALDEAN'S "Water Tower," followed by a challenge to LUKE COMBS.
COMBS became the most recent participant of the challenge, posting a video of himself singing CHRIS STAPLETON's "What Are You Listening To" this afternoon (3/24). COMBS has summoned Country great VINCE GILL to join the fun, saying, "I want to challenge VINCE GILL to The Deep Cuts Challenge, just because I want to hear VINCE sing something. I think a lot of people would enjoy that."
