Mason Returns To The Air Early On WGPR/Detroit

Despite a non-compete clause, former RADIO ONE Urban AC WDMK (105.9 KISS)/DETROIT afternoon driver JOHN MASON was on the air doing an extended morning shift TUESDAY (1/30) on crosstown Smooth Jazz WGPR (RHYTHM 107.5). It appears that he began two days before his non-compete clause was up. According to WGPR PD CAROL JAMES, “It was a teaser.” He wasn’t officially scheduled to start until today (2/1).
MASON’s contract with RADIO ONE expired in JULY 2006. He immediately began doing morning drive on WGPR. RADIO ONE hit him with a lawsuit, arguing he was bound by a six-month non-compete clause. According to MASON’s attorney, however, the non-compete expired as of JANUARY 29.
