AFTRA National Pres. JOHN CONNOLLY will step down to become National Exec. Director of ACTORS' EQUITY on MARCH 19. Longtime NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO "Morning Edition" host and current XM and PUBLIC RADIO INTERNATIONAL personality BOB EDWARDS, who is First National VP of the union, will assume President duties until the next AFTRA National Board meeting.
"The energy and passion JOHN demonstrated as AFTRA National President on behalf of actors, recording artists, journalists and broadcasters working in the media and entertainment -- combined with his commitment to the principles of organized labor -- will serve him well in his new role," AFTRA National Exec. Director KIM ROBERTS HEGPETH said.
With Bob Edwards at the helm and the support of the entire AFTRA leadership team, I know AFTRA will be in excellent hands as AFTRA members continue to move together.
CONNOLLY was elected National Pres. of AFTRA in 2001. At ACTORS' EQUITY he replaces ALAN EISENBERG, who announced last AUGUST he'd step down after 25 years; EISENBERG's successor was to be PATRICK QUINN, but QUINN died in SEPTEMBER.
"I am humbled by the confidence and responsibility bestowed upon me by EQUITY's National Council, and I pledge to serve our members with all my heart and soul," CONNOLLY said. "The decision to step down as President of AFTRA was difficult and heart-wrenching. I will forever cherish the gift of trust AFTRA members shared with me in electing me their President three times.
"With BOB EDWARDS at the helm and the support of the entire AFTRA leadership team, I know AFTRA will be in excellent hands as AFTRA members continue to move together."
