WILL SMITH will not return to the ACADEMY AWARDS ceremony for the next decade, so don't expect him to be handing out the award for Best Actress next year.
The ACADEMY's Board Of Governors has banned the year's Best Actor winner from attending the OSCARs until 2032, at the earliest, after his assault of comic CHRIS ROCK at this year's ceremony
The 54-member board met via ZOOM this morning to discuss “possible sanctions” against the actor — who will be allowed to keep his trophy.
The statement read, the Board has “decided, for a period of 10 years from APRIL 8th, 2022, MR. SMITH shall not be permitted to attend any ACADEMY events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the ACADEMY AWARDS.” Several sources reported the virtual confab was "contentious."
Board President DAVID RUBIN described SMITH’s actions as “unacceptable and harmful.” He also admitted that the Academy did not “adequately address the situation” during the live telecast.
“We want to express our deep gratitude to MR. ROCK for maintaining his composure under extraordinary circumstances. We also want to thank our hosts, nominees, presenters and winners for their poise and grace during our telecast. This action we are taking today in response to WILL SMITH’s behavior is a step toward a larger goal of protecting the safety of our performers and guests, and restoring trust in the ACADEMY.”
THE ACADEMY's Board Of Governors includes LAURA DERN, RITA WILSON, STEVEN SPIELBERG, AVA DuVERNAY and WHOOPI GOLDBERG.
SMITH previously resigned from the ACADEMY noting he would “fully accept any and all consequences” for his conduct imposed by the Board, which considered but ultimately decided against asking the actor to return his OSCAR.
"I accept and respect the ACADEMY's decision," WILL SMITH told N.Y. POST's PAGE SIX after the judgment came down.
