THE NEW YORK TIMES reports that three of ALEX JONES' companies have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as the conspiracy theorist and radio broadcaster faces heavy financial consequences in court for spreading falsehoods about the SANDY HOOK school shootings.
The companies, including JONES' streaming video and website outlet INFOWARS along with iWHEALTH and PRISON PLANET TV, filed petitions on SUNDAY (4/17) in U.S. BANKRUPTCY COURT for the Southern District of TEXAS. In the petitions, INFOWARS claims up to $50,000 in assets and $10 million in liabilities to 49 creditors; the other companies also claimed debts to 49 creditors, with iWHEALTH claiming up to $1 million in assets and PRISON PLANET TV claiming up to $50,000 in assets.
JONES, whose radio show is distributed by GENESIS COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK, has been on the losing end of multiple defamation lawsuits filed by the families of victims of the NEWTOWN, CT shootings; he spread the false theories that the shootings were arranged by the government to lead to confiscation of firearms.
VICE's ANNA MERLAN is reporting that some of the plaintiffs in the cases against JONES, parents of children killed in the shooting, allege in an APRIL 6th court filing that JONES has been diverting assets from INFOWARS to shell companies and trusts controlled by JONES' parents and other insiders since 2018, when the initial suit was filed.
On his INFOWARS show, MEDIA MATTERS FOR AMERICA reports, JONES denied that his companies had filed for bankruptcy, claiming, "I am not declaring bankruptcy and INFOWARS is not declaring bankruptcy. It's a chapter 11 reorganization in the federal courts so you can go and show them your books." Despite his denial, "Chapter 11" refers to Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code and is a form of bankruptcy that allows the filer to reorganize the company's finances and discharge some debt while retaining operational control of the company.
