After convening this morning to review the SONY CORP./BERTELSMANN AG merger and the EUROPEAN COMMISSION's continuing investigation into the deal (NET NEWS 3/1), the IMPALA board issued a statement today that reads, in part, "IMPALA continues to oppose absolutely the merger of SONY and BMG without appropriate remedies, which they have continually refused to contemplate."
On the EC's decision yesterday to continue its probe into the merger, IMPALA Pres. PATRICK ZELNICK said, "The Commission will now be able to carry out the full cultural impact assessment it is obliged to do under the Treaty. We will also be urging the Commission to take into account the recent acknowledgement by WARNER that concentration in music causes serious problems and needs serious solutions."
