THE LOUISVILLE COURIER-JOURNAL reports that TODD SMITH -- who was known on WDJX/LOUISVILLE as TODD KELLY and who authorities have said faked having LOU GEHRIG's disease and cancer, then stole as much as $150,000 that had been donated for disease research -- was indicted yesterday on charges of mail fraud, wire fraud and money laundering.
His mother, SYBIL SMITH of HARDIN COUNTY -- who had been charged along with her son with wire fraud in a criminal complaint last month in federal court -- was charged with two lesser offenses yesterday.
As ALL ACCESS reported (NET NEWS 5/4/06), SMITH first told his family, friends and co-workers that doctors had said he had LOU GEHRIG's disease and would live only three to five years, federal authorities have said. Then, in 2004, he announced that he also had developed bone cancer and might lose both legs, the FBI has said.
SMITH's TODD KELLY Foundation, as well as SMITH's friends, sponsored events to raise money for research. The FBI has said that SMITH used the money instead for personal expenses such as car payments, meals, limousines, vacations and alcohol.
