Answering the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF BROADCASTERS' assertion that it represents broadcasters in opposing the GEOBROADCAST SOLUTIONS "ZoneCasting" proposal to allow FM boosters to originate geotargeted content, a group of small FM station owners has sent letter to NAB Pres./CEO CURTIS LEGEYT reminding him that some broadcasters support the plan.
In the letter, the groups tell LEGEYT that they "believe geotargeting will give us the opportunity to serve our communities with hyperlocal content and compete for local ad dollars." The letter insists that the idea that the NAB is not hearing from broadcasters supporting the proposal is "not true," and that the NAB's position "will do long-term damage to the ability of broadcasters to continue to effectively advocate for deregulation of the broadcast sector." "(W)e are troubled and confused by the NAB’s position in support of a legacy regulation, rather than its repeal, the letter continues, suggesting that technological advances and the NAB's previous commitment to deregulation should lead the NAB to support rather than oppose the geotargeting plan.
