THE DAILY NEWS JOURNAL of MURFREESBORO, TN reports that RUTHERFORD GROUP News/Talk WGNS-A has made radio history by being one of the first AM stations granted a waiver to add two FM booster frequencies to its regular AM transmission, according to the station's owner.
"We have been working on it for 15 years," said WGNS station owner BART WALKER. "For 13 of those 15 years, it was sort of like talking to the wall. You'd go up there [WASHINGTON, DC] and meet with them [the FCC] and nothing would happen."
On MARCH 1, WGNS began transmitting from both 100.5 and 101.9 along with its regular frequency at 1450 AM. The possibility of change, WALKER said, came a year and a half ago when President BUSH appointed DEBORAH TAYLOR-TATE of MURFREESBORO to the FCC.
"The President appointed a new commissioner, one of the four commissioners," WALKER said. "Not only did she grow up in TENNESSEE, she grew up in MURFREESBORO, and suddenly we had somebody who would listen to us."
