ALPHABET, the parent company of GOOGLE, is cutting 12,000 jobs or approximately 6% of its global workforce. The reduction is the company's largest job cut.
ALPHABET & GOOGLE CEO SUNDAR PICHAI points to the company's rapid expansion during the pandemic as the catalyst for the cuts. Demand for digital services soared then but the need has eased. GOOGLE posted a message from PICHAI on the company's site. In that message, PICHAI noted, "Over the past two years we’ve seen periods of dramatic growth. To match and fuel that growth, we hired for a different economic reality than the one we face today."
In his memo, PICHAI noted the company's need to refocus on core products and technology important to its future, like artificial intelligence.
GOOGLE's cuts add to recent tech company job reductions at AMAZON, META, MICROSOFT and TWITTER. Those cuts now total over 190,000.
