The FCC has approved 76 noncommercial FM new station and modification applications in an order issued THURSDAY. The Commission also announced that another noncommercial educational FM filing window will be opened this FALL.
Commissioner MICHAEL COPPS said that he is hopeful that the Commission will act swiftly on petitions to deny filed against the 76 granted permits and is also happy with the minimum six months' notice for the new filing window, which he hoped "will give potential applicants —- including non-traditional stakeholders, such as Native American groups —- sufficient time to develop their applications, while at the same time ensuring that the new filing window opens in a timely fashion."
Commissioner JONATHAN ADELSTEIN added, pointedly, "I am pleased that, at least when it comes to noncommercial radio, the Commission puts local ownership on top of our list of factors to consider."
