SOUTH CENTRAL Classic Rock WIMZ/KNOXVILLE evening personality PHYLLIS WEIXELBAUM, who used the on-air name PHYLLIS WEST, died TUESDAY at a hospice center in CONNECTICUT, according to THE KNOXVILLE NEWS-SENTINEL. Reared in ATLANTA and CHICAGO, WEIXELBAUM worked at several CALIFORNIA stations, including L.A.'s KIIS and KLSX. She left KMBY/MONTEREY to accept an on-air position at WIMZ in 2003.
TERRY GILLINGHAM, GM for SOUTH CENTRAL TADIO/KNOXVILLE, said WEIXELBAUM, 44, had been ill since the summer of 2006. She was diagnosed with a rare form of muscular cancer. She stopped appearing on the air in SEPTEMBER 2006. "It's a terrible loss," said GILLINGHAM, who first worked with WEST at KMBY. "She was a very compelling and interesting woman. She was extremely intelligent and she loved to say things just to get a reaction."
