Rickey Smiley's Protest Helps Free 15-Year-Old Dallas Girl

RADIO ONE Urban KBFB (97.7 THE BEAT)/DALLAS morning maniac RICKEY SMILEY organized a protest opposing the incarceration of SHAQUANDRA COTTON. The 15-year-old was recently convicted of pushing a school hall monitor. She served one year of a seven-year sentence in the TEXAS YOUTH COMMISSION. SMILEY felt, and said on-the-air, there was blatant racism on the part of the presiding judge, CHUCK SPERVILLE. He's the same judge who recently gave probation to two whites, one accused of arson, the other manslaughter.
The protest in front of the LAMAR COUNTY COURTHOUSE, headed by SMILEY, drew hundreds and caught the attention of the DALLAS media, and within days COTTON was released.
