REV. AL SHARPTON has canceled plans to honor ISLAND DEF JAM CEO ANTONIO “L.A.” REID as rap music continues to take some of the heat for racist comments made by shock jock DON IMUS. SHARPTON was scheduled to honor REID with the JAMES BROWN MEMORIAL CULTURAL IMPACT AWARD during his NATIONAL ACTION NETWORK’s annual four-day conference, which started today (4/18) at the NEW YORK SHERATON.
SHARPTON claims he has withdrawn his support in the wake of criticism over the content of some rap lyrics. SHARPTON said he intends to name and target corporations that support “gutter” rap. Artists currently signed to L.A. REID’s label include JAY-Z, LUDACRIS and YOUNG JEEZY.
