GMA MUSIC WEEK 2007 wrapped up in NASHVILLE WEDNESDAY night with the 38TH ANNUAL GMA DOVE AWARDS. Many events, seminars and showcases led up to the Christian music’s biggest night at the GRAND OLE OPRY HOUSE.
GMA Special Awards:
Kicking off the week, the GOSPEL MUSIC ASSOCIATION (GMA) announced the recipients of the GMA Special Awards on MONDAY (4/23) morning at the annual membership meeting. The Impact Award went to APPLE’s ITUNES. The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to an entity rather than individual, and this year the award went to the classic hymn “Amazing Grace.” The Outstanding Mainstream Contribution Award went to filmmaker TYLER PERRY for his two feature films, “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” and “Madea’s Family Reunion,” which prompted discussion among industry watchers. Named for “Hee Haw’s” GRADY NUTT, the GRADY NUTT Humor Award was given to BIG IDEA. The International Award went to both the U.K.'s DELIRIOUS and AUSTRALIA's HILLSONG UNITED for the impact made not only in their own countries but in the world at large.CHRISTIAN MUSIC BROADCASTERS (CMB):
Also on MONDAY morning, GMA and CMB presented the SCOTT CAMPBELL Radio Award to EMP BROADCASTING’s ALAN MASON for outstanding efforts and contributions in broadcasting and the ROB GREGORY Award to ALLEN HENDERSON of HIS RADIO for major contributions made to the community through the medium of radio.Numbers are forthcoming for the whole event, but GMA reports that the registration numbers for CMB were up this year.
DOVE AWARDS:
CHRIS TOMLIN was the most honored artist WEDNESDAY at the GOSPEL MUSIC ASSOCIATION's DOVE AWARDS, winning six trophies, including his second consecutive Artist of the Year award. Besides the top award, TOMLIN also won Male Vocalist for the second year and Worship Song of the Year for "Holy Is Lord," and was recognized for his involvement with the Special Event Album of the Year, "Passion: Everything Glorious." TOMLIN's current album, "See the Morning," won two more awards: Pop/Contemporary Album and Praise and Worship Album.AARON SHUST was named New Artist of the Year, and he won Song and Songwriter of the Year awards for "My Savior, My GOD." NATALIE GRANT won Female Vocalist for the second consecutive year.CASTING CROWNS won Group of the Year for the third year in a row.
Earlier in the evening, ALAN JACKSON's gospel album "Precious Memories" won Country Album of the Year. ED CASH won Producer of the Year. The awards, held at the GRAND OLE OPRY HOUSE, will be televised in national syndication in MAY. For a complete list of winners, click here.
