Report: Limbaugh, Salem Targeted By House Democrats In Fairness Doctrine Push
May 14, 2007 at 12:42 PM (PT)
Are SALEM RADIO NETWORK and RUSH LIMBAUGH being targeted by Speaker of the House NANCY PELOSI and Reps. STENY HOYER (D-MD) and DENNIS KUCINICH (D-OH) as the three push the return of the Fairness Doctrine to the front burner? "THE WASHINGTON PROWLER," a column in the AMERICAN SPECTATOR, reported in an online article today (5/14) that a PELOSI senior adviser told the magazine, "First, [Democrats] failed on the radio airwaves with AIR AMERICA, no one wanted to listen. Conservative radio is a huge threat and political advantage for Republicans and we have had to find a way to limit it. Second, it looks like the Republicans are going to have someone in the presidential race who has access to media in ways our folks don't want, so we want to make sure the GOP has no advantages going into 2008." The "PROWLER" suggests that the last comment is a reference to former Sen. FRED THOMPSON, an ABC NEWS RADIO commentator and actor.
We know we can't shut him up, but we want to make life a bit more difficult for him.
The magazine says that PELOSI is planning to take aim at several targets in the fight, including LIMBAUGH and SALEM, and that KUCINICH's staff is investigating SALEM, with a Government Reform committee staffer saying, "They are identifying senior employees, their political activities and their political giving. SALEM is a big target, but the big one is going to be LIMBAUGH. We know we can't shut him up, but we want to make life a bit more difficult for him."
On his show MONDAY, LIMBAUGH devoted much of the first hour to the article and the Fairness Doctrine threat.
