CTV Spinoff Proposal Too Late, Says CRTC

CTVGLOBEMEDIA's attempt to smooth the way for its purchase of CHUM LTD. by proposing to sell TV stations in WINNIPEG, CALGARY and EDMONTON gets rejected by the CRTC as untimely.
The GLOBE AND MAIL reports that the CRTC informed CTV by letter that the proposal, which was contingent on the CRTC denying GLOBAL's application to have its independent CKRD-TV (CH)/RED DEER, AB declared local in CALGARY and EDMONTON, will not be considered since it was filed after the conclusion of hearings in GATINEAU, QC two weeks ago.
CTV proposed divesting the CITY-TV stations in the three markets to partially deflect criticism that the CHUM deal creates impermissible television duopolies in several markets. CTV had proposed retaining duopolies in TORONTO and VANCOUVER and has already announced the spinoff of A-CHANNEL stations across ONTARIO and in VICTORIA, BC to ROGERS.
