ALL ACCESS has confirmed that that ELROY R.C. SMITH, whose responsibilities at CLEAR CHANNEL/CHICAGO were streamlined under a management realignment in MARCH (NET NEWS 3/6), has resigned following a 15-year run of programming at Urban WGCI and most recently concentrating on Urban AC WVAZ (V103). He will leave CLEAR CHANNEL next month at the end of his contract.
According to CLEAR CHANNEL/CHICAGO Pres./Market Manager EARL JONES, ARMANDO RIVERA will serve as interim V103 PD. RIVERA joined V103 in 2001 as Asst. PD/MD. Word in the WINDY CITY is that CHUCK ATKINS, formerly OM at CLEAR CHANNEL/ST. LOUIS overseeing Urban KATZ and UAC KMJM, is in line for the permanent PD position. CHRIS KELLY remains the PD at WGCI.
"ELROY SMITH is leaving CLEAR CHANNEL RADIO CHICAGO," JONES said in a staff memo. "ELROY's expertise was a tremendous asset to our stations during his 15 years of service. We wish him well during the next phase of his life and career.
"Here are a few thoughts from ELROY: 'This decision comes after 15 years at WGCI, 6 1/2 years at V103 and much deliberation. Words cannot explain my gratitude to this company for giving me a memorable experience in the radio industry. Many of my co-workers have made my extensive tenure at CLEAR CHANNEL joyous, which I'll remember forever. I am extremely excited to explore other opportunities and challenges in the broadcasting industry at this stage in my career.'
"ELROY will be greatly missed by the CLEAR CHANNEL RADIO CHICAGO family. His last day is FRIDAY, JUNE 1."
And SMITH told ALL ACCESS, "I am very grateful to CLEAR CHANNEL for allowing me the opportunity to groom and develop these stations [WGCI and WVAZ] into the kind of broadcast facilities that could and did make a difference for the CHICAGO community they served. I'm going to be looking forward to exploring my next opportunity." SMITH declined to say at this time what that opportunity might be.
SMITH was Operations Dir./PD for WGCI and WVAZ and Operations Dir. for Gospel WGRB-A until a MARCH shakeup. CLEAR CHANNEL eliminated the title of Operations Director at its CHICAGO stations, and SMITH's sole job for the company became PD for V103.
As for RIVERA, JONES said, "ARMANDO has been the model of consistent hard work and dedication. ARMANDO now has the chance to get his hands firmly planted on the wheel and showcase his talents. He has definitely earned this opportunity."
