It's Official: Dave Sholin Joins KFRC For Mornings
June 15, 2007 at 10:43 AM (PT)
It was first reported on ALL ACCESS (NET NEWS 6/14), and now it's official, as CBS Classic Hits KFRC/SAN FRANCISCO names DAVE "THE DUKE" SHOLIN as host of the station’s morning show MONDAY through FRIDAY from 5:30-10a. The appointment, effective JULY 2, was announced by VP/GM STEVE DINARDO.
SHOLIN, named one of music’s "Heavy Hundred" by ROLLING STONE magazine and an inductee into THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME, graduated from SAN FRANCISCO STATE and started his radio career at SAN JOSE’s KLIV as MD/announcer. After finding success at KLIV he then revamped the ailing KARA into a BAY AREA ratings powerhouse as one of the first architects of the Hot AC format. SHOLIN then joined RKO’s KFRC.
This is something I'd have never predicted happening, but all of a sudden I'm back on the radio.
RKO then promoted SHOLIN to National MD, where he oversaw the playlists of all RKO’s music stations. While serving in this capacity, he was able to interview many musicians, including one interview that was truly historic: On DECEMBER 8, 1980, SHOLIN spent the afternoon talking with JOHN LENNON in his NEW YORK home in what would end up being LENNON’s last interview.
After overseeing production of "The Beatles: From LIVERPOOL to Legend," SHOLIN returned to the BAY AREA, becoming GAVIN REPORT’s Top 40 Editor. In 1984, SHOLIN and several other editors bought the GAVIN REPORT, and when the magazine was sold in 1993 SHOLIN stayed on as Executive Director. Also in 1984, SHOLIN returned to KFRC as on-air/PD as well as hosting syndicated Top 40 shows for WESTWOOD ONE and PREMIERE RADIO. In 1998 SHOLIN moved to the record industry where he has served as VP/Promotion for both ISLAND RECORDS and CAPITOL RECORDS, VP of MUSICBIZ.COM, as well as Senior Dir./Adult Promotion for the EMI MUSIC COLLECTIVE and most recently Dir./Adult Formats for CAROLINE.ASTRELWERKS RECORDS.
"DAVE’s past experience at KFRC came at a time when the station was in the forefront of popular culture in the BAY AREA," commented DINARDO. "He has retained that sense of relevance throughout his career; and we’re excited to unleash it on the new 106.9, KFRC."
SHOLIN told ALL ACCESS, "This is something I'd have never predicted happening, but all of a sudden I'm back on the radio. When I heard 'Don't Stop Believing' on 'The SOPRANOS,' I knew this was a sign to do this. To me KFRC were the four letters that spelled home for me for 15 years, and I'm coming home again. Gotta thank BILL HEIN and DAVE LOMBARDI at CAROLINE/ASTRALWERKS for their support for this move beginning JULY 2. Until then I'm still talking to radio about playing the KOOKS and soon CINDER ROAD. My thanks to JOHNNY BARBIS for getting me in the record business, and now I'm going to be playing a lot of the songs that he broke out of SAN FRANCISCO. Can't wait to begin working with STEVE DINARDO, VP/Programming MIKE PRESTON, and PD TIM JORDAN. My thanks to them for this great opportunity."
