EAS Glitch In Chicago Sends WGN Audio Through Rival TV, Radio Stations

A glitch in testing the EMERGENCY ALERT SYSTEM had CHICAGO TV and radio stations -- and some from as far away as the ST. LOUIS area -- airing about two minutes of TRIBUNE Talk WGN-A/CHICAGO morning man SPIKE O'DELL while the video of TV stations showed alerts either for the DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA or the UNITED STATES.
The problems, which cropped up in the 7a CT hour, were apparently caused by federal testing of a new satellite warning system installed on MONDAY. The test inadvertently went to stations instead of remaining internal and resulted in WGN, a primary EAS station, having its audio airing on competing stations, including CBS News WBBM-A, for a few minutes.
