Veteran talk host, PD, and current NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH "HEALTH MATTERS" Producer BILL SCHMALFELDT is wrapping up successful treatment for Parkinson's Disease in a unique "deep brain stimulation" surgical procedure being clinically tested at VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER.
SCHMALFELDT tells ALL ACCESS that the "brain pacemaker," normally given to late-stage Parkinson's patients, is being tested for those in earlier stages of the disease. The doctors still have to implant neurostimulators, which will allow SCHMALFELDT to ease up drastically on his medications (and their side effects).
