The GOSPEL MUSIC ASSOCIATION (GMA) Board of Directors recently authorized the establishment of the Government Relations Committee. The committee met for the first time on JUNE 25. The purpose of this new standing committee is to help formulate GMA’s position on various issues and to advise the President/CEO when the GMA is asked to lobby members of CONGRESS or to endorse legislative or regulatory initiatives.
Committee members who were present at the first meeting were GMA Pres./CEO JOHN STYLL, KSBJ/HOUSTON VP/Operations JON HULL, EMI CMG PUBLISHING Pres. EDDIE DeGARMO, BRENTWOOD-BENSON MUSIC PUBLISHING Pres. DALE MATTHEWS, SESAC Dir./Writer-Publisher Relations JOHN MULLINS, ASCAP VP/Membership NASHVILLE DAN KEEN, FLICKER RECORDS A&R MARK STUART and BMI VP/Writer-Publisher Relations NASHVILLE JODY WILLIAMS.
Committee members were chosen because they represent various constituencies among the music community and GMA membership, providing diverse viewpoints and perspective. Some of the legislative issues discussed at the inaugural meeting were the “Fair Use” bill, the “PERFORM” Act, Section 115 reform, anti-piracy enforcement, terrestrial radio performance right, and Webcasting royalty rates.
