Jury Says 2GB/Sydney Host Defamed Muslim Spokesman
August 2, 2007 at 5:45 AM (PT)
Talk 2GB/SYDNEY host JASON MORRISON's comments about a local Muslim spokesman have been ruled defamatory by a NEW SOUTH WALES SUPREME COURT jury. The jury found eight comments MORRISON made about KEYSAR TRAD on DECEMBER 19 in the wake of a peace rally after the CRONULLA riot defamed TRAD, the former spokesman for Sheik TAJ AL-DIN AL-HILALI, the cleric controversial for anti-Semitic comments and for suggesting that women invite rape by dressing provocatively. MORRISON, filling in for RAY HADLEY, called TRAD a hypocrite and a pest inciting racism and violence.
Defendant HARBOUR RADIO, the licensee of 2GB, will have a chance to offer its defense and the jury will mull financial damages at a later date.
