FCC Proposes Allowing AMs To Use FM Translators As Fill-Ins
August 16, 2007 at 11:25 AM (PT)
The FCC has released its Notice of Proposed Rule Making that would allow FM translators to be used by AM stations as "fill-in service" within a 25-mile radius of the AM transmitter site or the 2 mV/m daytime contour of the AM station, whichever is smaller.
The proposed rule follows an NAB petition that the FCC notes received over 500 comments, the "overwhelming majority" of which supported the proposal. The proceeding is also asking for comments on the possibility of daytimer AMs originating programming on the FM translator during nighttime hours. Comments will be due 60 days from publication of the Notice in the FEDERAL REGISTER, with replies due 90 days after publication.
