The family of late reggae icon BOB MARLEY announced their intention to sue UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP and VERIZON WIRELESS for using MARLEY's name, likeness and image without permission.
The family-owned FIFTY SIX HOPE ROAD MUSIC LTD. sent out a press release asserting that UMG's agreement with VERIZON WIRELESS -- which will utilize BOB MARLEY's name, likeness and image to promote a new set of ringtones -- was "entered into without the permission of the MARLEY Family."
A UMG spokesperson told REUTERS that it has yet to receive a lawsuit from the MARLEY estate, adding that the claims made in the press release were "meritless ... Specifically, we are offering BOB MARLEY ringtones through VERIZON in accordance with the terms of a long-standing contract between BOB MARLEY and UMG."
