A legal war has erupted in PHOENIX between RIVIERA Top 40/Rhythmic KKFR (POWER 98.3) and CBS RADIO Top 40/Rhythmic KZON (101.5 JAMZ). KZON morning co-host KRAZY KID STEVENS has filed suit against RIVIERA, KKFR, KKFR PD BRUCE ST. JAMES and KKFR's BOOTLEG KEV for harassment. STEVENS' lawyers have also asked for an injunction against KKFR, ST. JAMES and KKFR's employees to stay away from his house and place of business.
The gist of the lawsuit centers around an e-mail allegedly sent by ST. JAMES to his staff, rallying his staff to prepare for their new competitor, KZON. In the e-mail, ST. JAMES implores his staff by stating, "Those who don't have the stomach for this will be weeded out rather quickly. We cannot afford those who hesitate or would prefer not to dirty their hands to drag the rest of us down. Strap on your armor, we are going to war."
Allegedly, the guerilla war included incidents where RIVIERA employees showed up at the KZON offices and at KZON remotes with with cards and signs denouncing STEVENS and his less-than-street roots. On AUGUST 13th, KKFR employees, including BOOTLEG KEV, allegedly dressed as Ku Klux Klansmen, arrived at the station claiming they had a meeting set with STEVENS. They also passed out flyers promoting a speech by "acclaimed white supremacist KKKID STEVENS." Furthermore the suit alleged that POWER GM NAT GALVIN took station responsibility for the stunt, which he described as "below the belt."
STEVENS is asking for compensatory and punitive damages of an undisclosed amount that would also cover all legal and attorneys' fees.
