Dorgan, Lott Threaten To Block FCC Ownership Rule Action

As expected, Sens. BYRON DORGAN (D-ND) and TRENT LOTT (R-MS) threatened to block FCC Chairman KEVIN MARTIN's efforts to speed the ownership rules review to a mid-DECEMBER conclusion, telling a press conference WEDNESDAY that they would try to use a resolution of disapproval to block the FCC's move. Such a resolution has only been tried once before to block an FCC action, the last media ownership rule change, but the resolution was mooted by court action invalidating part of the rules.
"There's no urgency for the agency to further relax ownership rules. In fact I would make the case that there's no set of evidence to suggest they should be relaxed," said DORGAN, who promised another SENATE COMMERCE COMMITTEE hearing on ownership in the near future.
