When ILLINOIS' statewide smoking ban kicks in on JANUARY 1, 2008, NEXTMEDIA Classic rock WERV (THE RIVER)/CHICAGO will voluntarily quit "Smokin’" on the air.
What they're referring to, of course, is the song "Smokin'," by BOSTON. THE RIVER plans to repeat BOSTON’s "Smokin’" all day long on DECEMBER 31st with hints and tips on how listeners can quit smoking including public service announcements from the American Cancer Society, and commercial announcements from clinics specializing in kicking the habit
PD and ex-smoker MATT DUBIEL explains they won’t extinguish the song without a proper send off, "We’re devoting DECEMBER 31st to supporting our listeners who still smoke. If they have to quit smoking in public, we will too!"
