A front-page story in this morning's (1/4), TENNESSEAN is reporting that Country album sales in the U.S. dropped 16.3% in 2007, slightly more than the 15% slide seen in total album sales this year, according to figures released THURSDAY by NIELSEN/SOUNDSCAN.
The report also points out that last year Country sales were only down a half-percent in the year-end report.
Only The EAGLES' Country exercise "Long Road Out of Eden" and breakout Country newcomer TAYLOR SWIFT's self-titled debut on BIG MACHINE made the cut for the year's all-genre top-10 selling albums list.
SONY BMG Chairman JOE GALANTE said of the slide: "There's no doubt that everybody in town has been affected by what's happened to the industry overall," he said. "Some of us may fare better than others, but when the market drops that much it affects everybody. ... (And) I think it will continue on."
