Fire Hits KOOP/Austin... Again
January 8, 2008 at 7:26 PM (PT)
Another fire has knocked noncommercial Variety KOOP/AUSTIN off the air, the third time a fire has hit the community station's studios in recent years. The fire broke out sometime overnight SATURDAY night/SUNDAY morning, with the station's Airport Blvd. studio sustaining damages estimated between $100,000 and $200,000. The station expects to be off the air for a few weeks while repairs are made, or sooner if an alternate site can be readied.
The fire came on the second anniversary of a fire that burned the station's previous studios on Fifth Street in AUSTIN and knocked the station off for a week; a month after the earlier fire, another fire destroyed the Fifth Street building, sending the station to temporary facilities before the new Airport Blvd. studios opened in DECEMBER 2006.
And on TUESDAY, AUSTIN FIRE DEPARTMENT arson investigators said that the fire appeared to have been deliberately set.
