WPIA Discontinues Wii Contest

INDEPENDENCE MEDIA Top 40 WPIA (98.5 KISS FM)/PEORIA raised some eyebrows, and got a rival trade to bite, when it announced a "Hold Your Pii For A Wii" promotion on JANUARY 30th, where the contestant will win a NINTENDO Wii.
If that concept sounds vaguely familiar, it should. Exactly one year ago today, (NET NEWS 1/15/07), ENTERCOM Top 40 KDND (107.9 THE END)/SACRAMENTO's morning show held a "Hold Your Wee For A Wii" water-drinking contest -- and 28-year old contestant JENNIFER STRANGE died of "water intoxication." While no charges were filed, 10 station staffers lost their jobs afterwards.
This, however, was totally different. PD DON BLACK explained to ALL ACCESS, "This wasn't a drinking contest of any kind. In fact, what we were asking listeners to do was hold the letter 'P' (for PEORIA) above their heads."
The station has since discontinued the contest.
Guess some folks just assumed -- and we all remember where that gets us.
