January 24, 2008 at 5:45 AM (PT)
ABC Talk KABC-A/LOS ANGELES late-morning and evening host AL RANTEL told listeners WEDNESDAY that he has been diagnosed with lymphoma. RANTEL, who has been off the air recently, wrote a statement read on the air by afternoon host LARRY ELDER saying, "Thank you to so many of you who have inquired about my recent absence from the air -– I have missed you as well!
"Many of you know that during the holidays I felt under the weather. Since then, I have learned that I have a highly treatable form of lymphoma. I wanted to share this with you -– my listeners -– directly, as so many of you have been not only loyal but have truly become members of my 'family.' I am glad to report that I am receiving the finest medical treatment available and that my prognosis is excellent. I am taking important steps to regain my health and have started chemotherapy.
"While I must take some time off now to recuperate and focus my energy on my health, I very much look forward to returning to the air as soon as possible. I greatly appreciate your well wishes."
