Philadelphia PPM: WBEB Explodes As WOGL, Greater Media Outlets Slide
January 30, 2008 at 4:11 PM (PT)
WEAZ INC.-owned AC WBEB-FM rode Santa to a huge holiday book, scoring a 17.1 share (one can only imagine how big the first two weeks were). WBEB had more than double the shares of CBS News KYW, which moved into second place with a 7.2.
WBEB clearly affected CBS Classic Hits WOGL and GREATER MEDIA Classic Rock WMGK. WOGL is off 1.8 shares (26%) since AUGUST, while WMGK is down 37%. While the holiday music has definitely affected both stations, WMGK had been sliding prior to the holiday.
RADIO ONE saw growth for Gospel WPPZ, which has seen three consecutive months over a 3.0 share. The station is up 28% to last AUGUST. CLEAR CHANNEL, however, has taken control of the Urban battle, as heritage WUSL (2.7-2.8) has overtaken RADIO ONE rival WPHI, which has slid 2.9-2.2 (down 24%) since AUGUST. CLEAR CHANNEL also dominates in Urban AC as WDAS tops RADIO ONE's WRNB by 81% (5.6 to 3.1).
GREATER MEDIA's cluster is down across the board. Although primarily targeted to non-ethnic adults 25-54, they may be affected by WBEB as well. Also impacting their Rock stations could be the recent conversion of CBS Talk WYSP to Rock. Since AUGUST, here is the share change for GREATER MEDIA:
Active Rock WMMR (5.3-4.4, -17%)
Classic Rock WMGK (6.5-4.1, -37%)
Adult Hits WBEN (3.8-2.9, -24%)
Smooth Jazz WJJZ (1.7-1.3, -24%)
WJJZ has yet to gain traction, and the 1.3 share in the holiday survey is the lowest to date.
How was WYSP affected the market? WYSP finished with a 1.5 as a Talk station and currently sits at a 2.3, so it has seen decent growth (+53%) even though it was as high as a 2.7 in NOVEMBER. That said, the station had some effect on CLEAR CHANNEL Alternative WRFF, which is down 4.4-3.3 since 'YSP moved back into the Rock format.
